Here we have anAntique I. SORBY, Sheffield, 3/16\" Wide Heavy Duty Mortise \"Pig Sticker\" Chisel.This company existed in Sheffield andwas established in 1797 by John Sorby (uncle of Robert Sorby). Its original trademarkwas the “hanging sheep”, or Golden Fleece, registered by John Sorby in1791. The company was engaged in themanufacture of edge tools, saws, sheep shears, and files. However, they werenot plane makers, but rather manufacturers of plane irons. After hisretirement, the business was taken over by sons John and Henry, hence thetrademark “I & H SORBY” (I and J were not separate at the time). Thetrademark ‘I Sorby’ and the Mr. Punch image have been used by several makersover the years, making it hard to pin down. It is connected to John Sorby, hissons John and Henry (trademark I & H Sorby.The upper section of the blade is marked I SORBY and has their Mr. Punch logoThis tang style chisel has a heavy duty hardwoodhandle with no cracks. Handle is rock solid.The chisel body is in good clean condition with no rust, cracks orrepairs. Edge is sharp but new ownershould touch up before use. Total length is 12\". There is an owner stamp on two sides. Please review the pics to confirm condition !
