Antique 17th Century Verdure Tapestry Lady's Box Chest Flemish Wrought Iron OLD:

This significant rarity from the last quarter of the 17th c.-first quarter of the 18th century measures 13 1/4" tall x 22" x 15 5/8" overall and is crafted of beech wood with hand wrought iron lock, handles, hinges and escutcheon. The box is structurally quite sound with minimal worming evident and the sides are covered in Flemish verdure style tapestry of the same period held in place with neat rows of brass headed tacks. It's top covering appears to have been restored later in the 18th century using needlepoint work.The interior is remarkably well preserved and lined in emerald green silk with contrasting silk bands of pale rose. Both halves of the lock remain and the main lock box is delicately engraved in floral designs. The exterior exibits wear and soiling commensurate with age with a significant amount of corrosion in the fibers of the dark green background color leaving warps and wefts exposes. There are small voids (under dime size) with old fabric in-fill and wear and loss from use at the corners. There is significant verdigris to the tack heads in several places and the bottom of the box has a large open joint where 2 beech boards were joined with whittled pins/dowels. The fabric covering is gone from the bottom. There are NO screws used...handles and hinges are blacksmith riveted. This little coffer is a genuine survivor with all structural elements having started out together.Please e-mail me if you have any questions.
