All rights reserved.Fun poster featuring the Antarctic Snow Cruiser, which was designed under the direction of Thomas Poulter, second in command of the 1934 Byrd\'s Second Antarctic Expedition. Poulter designed a number of innovative features into this vehicle, which was built to support a 1939-1940 U.S. expedition to the South Pole.The mammoth vehicle weighed in at 39 tons, the 55-foot-long behemoth had 120-foot-tall retractable heated tires, room for a crew of five, and cargo space for a light aircraft on its roof. But despite its careful design, and its nickname \"The Penguin,\" the Snow Cruiser was not well suited for Antarctic travel, struggling so much with grip on the ice that the $300,000 machine was eventually repurposed into a static operating base and then abandoned in 1941. The Snow Cruiser was found, dug out of the ice and snow in 1946 and recommissioned with some basic servicing and air in the tires. It was abandoned again and re-excavated in 1958 from beneath 23 feet of snow. Using a bulldozer, the crew as able to excavate to the bottom of the wheels and accurately measure the amount of snowfall since The Penguin was abandoned. Inside, the vehicle was exactly as the 1940s crew had left it, with papers, magazines, and cigarettes scattered all around. Now, it is nowhere to be found, probably at the bottom of the Southern Ocean or covered again in ice and snow.Numbered in a limited edition of 100 and embellished with striking red foil embossing.This poster is beautifully rendered in richly colored inks on a substantial textured stock, using 3-D digital graphics to build this impressive vehicle from scratch from the ground up and the inside out for a remarkably true-to-life image.Poster measures 19.5\" x 27.5\" (50 cm x 70 cm).
