Rare Document from from USS Lexington (CV-2)


USS Lexington (The Lex) was called out to aid in the search for Amelia Earhart after she was lost on July 2, 1937

Lexington was at Pearl Harbor when Amelia Earhart was lost and was called to assist in the search until approximately July 19, 1937

During the search the Lexington crossed the Equator at the International Date Line on July 20, 1937.


The Item:

US Navy U.S.S. Lexington Domain of Neptunes Rex and the Golden Dragon certificate dated July 20, 1937.

The certificate - with sailor\'s name section blank - measures 15x19.5.

There is some edge wear and browning from age.

The certificate has been folded down the middle .


The Domain of Neptunes Rex and the Golden Dragon:

Domain of Neptunes Rex is title of Shellback is an unofficial title bestowed on sailors who cross the Equator on a ship.

The Golden Dragon is an unofficial title bestowed to those crossing the International Date Line.


The Ship: USS Lexington (CV-2)

The Lexington assumed control of the search for Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan on July 12, 1937, focusing on a 600 miles by 400 miles area to the North and West of Howland Island. On July 18th - 19th, with carrier aircraft having covered thousands of square miles, the search effort was suspended.


\"The Lex\" was sunk during World War 2 in the Battle of the Coral Sea on May 8, 1942,
