This small, 10-inch-tall statue is a charming example of the art of the Luba people who live along lakes and rivers in the southeastern savannah region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There are several different Luba groups and, as a result, their sculptural art includes a large variety of subjects and styles. The top part of the statuette shows a woman carrying a flat disc. This is a small-scale example of a Luba king\'s stool. In a full-size stool the female figure would sit on some sort of platform, but the sculptor created a novel combination by replacing the platform by an elephant.
