I own an advertising specialty company - now in our 45th year I am happy to report - and worked in the industry for many years prior to establishing my own firm. For many years my best client was what was formerly known as "The Bell System". Of course after divestiture it was broken up into what was generally called the "Baby Bells" - and later morphed into many variations. So over the years we worked very closely with Western Electric, AT&T, Southern Bell, Lucent Technologies, OFS, Avaya, etc. I collected many over-run samples, one-or-a-kind spec samples, and the likes.I am now selling much of that collection via . Here is a custom made one-of-a-kind desk set with a story.
First the desk set details...then the story...In the 1980's at the Premium Show in Chicago I met a nice lady with a company called Village Time. She only had a very small booth and was manning (not to be sexist) it alone. She offered gifts utilizing beautiful Brazilian agate. I was fascinate by their beauty. No two are alike as the vein varies. We talked for a while and I discovered Village Time was a small company recently started by her brother. He was a physician who enjoyed travel. In a journey to Brazil he discovered their wonderful agate. He was so taken with the luster and beauty that he started this company importing it to be used for gifts.
Brazilian Agate is the hardest mineral on earth. Diamond saw blades are required for cutting and the piece is then hand polished for brilliance and luster. It took about 80 million years for this rock to form...and I thought I was old!
During our conversation, it developed that she had to use the restroom. She asked if my wife and I would "man" her booth briefly - which we did. At the time she was not a member of the specialty industry. We later assisted Village Time in becoming a valued industry supplier.
I ordered several samples and we began a relationship. As it turned out, many of my customers were as taken with Brazilian agate as I, and we sold much of it. I still l enjoy the uniqueness of each piece. In fact, we still have several pieces around our home. My favorite is a clock where the rock design appears to be an old steam train rounding the bend of a mountain. Exquisite!
Now to the story: In 1989 - yes, I can not recall what I had for breakfast this morning, but can remember how this one-of-a-kind sample came to be - Western Electric Atlanta works called in a panic. My friend and contact in their public relations department - who later opened a small shop in Helen, GA selling "twig" furniture - needed a personalized gift in a hurry - as in by the afternoon. And she wanted it to be someway related to their business.
I quickly searched through my samples, inventory and whatever else I had at the time and assembled several possible gifts. Among those presented was this Brazilian agate desk set. I had this as an unimprinted sample. And I also inventoried a cute die cast 3-D replica of a desk set telephone. I quickly mounted the phone replica on a metal plate suitable for engraved personalization and showed this as a possible gift.
As you can see, the desk set has a note holder and very strong magnet for paperclips. Several gold brass clips are included as well - along with the "romance" card.
Fortunately or unfortunately depending upon one's viewpoint, this Brazilian Agate was not selected. Instead she chose a Parker desk set as it had a more recognizable name, included their logo and too could be personalized. I engraved the name and returned it for presentation very quickly.
This suggested gift was put to the side and apparently forgotten. The reason it seemed to slip my mind was that instead of placing it among special samples, I put it in the area with emblems, along with the other 3-D phone replicas. Recently while searching that area of a sample room I found this among the 3-D replica emblems. I also found a couple I had embedded in Lucite. In fact, I recently listed those and I think they may have sold. They were beautiful!
So I have held on to this sample since 1989. Over 30 years old and yet it is in pristine as new condition. The staff pen was U.S.A. made by Joseph Lipic Pen Company of St. Louis and contains the original refill. So if used rather than displayed, a new refill is needed - which are readily available. And of course the calendar is a bit our of date, but can be replaced wiht a photo. It is still in it's original box and quite substantial, It weighs well over two pounds!
This one-of-a-kind lovely desk set can be yours - but that's not all! If you like, I can engrave a name on the metal plate so it will be personalized! Just provide me with details.
An excellent addition for anyone who works or worked at AT&T. Or as it is more of a generic telephone, a super gift for anyone who was associated with the Bell System.
From a smoke-free, pet-free climate controlled environment. PLUS you will receive a free personalized hand drawn in ink cartoon "Thank You" note! With 1550+ response's and 100% positive responses you can buy from me with confidence!
