Antique large (approx. 1-3/4" tall with bale loop)Catholic Crucifix pendant featuringa "Mission" design with imageof the Crucified Savior over the skull with crossbones (Adam's head) and the "INRI" nameplate in the top part. The skull with crossbones refers to Golgotha (Calvary), the elevated site where Jesus wascrucified, which the Bible says means "the place of the skull" inHebrew. An ancient tradition of Catholic and Orthodox Churches held that it wasalso the burial place of Adam, thus symbolizing the ultimate victory of Christover sin and death.

The reverse displaysthe "MISSION"inscription andsymbolic images of the Instruments of the Passion (ArmaChristi), including the Crown of Thorns, hammer, pincers, the Holy Sponge seton a reed, the rooster of St. Peter's denials of Jesus, the Holy Lance, thewhip, the ladder used for the Deposition, and the Crucifixion nails.

TheCrucifix appears to have been made from bronze or brass or a similarhistorical copper alloy of unknown composition.Origin likely c. late 19th - early 20th century Western Europe.The item shows significant signs of wearconsistent with its suggested age and long devotional use, such as reducedquality of artwork, deformations of the original shape, visible scratches or superficialcracks, dents and patches of patina/oxidation.Some superficial layers of the original thick patina have been removed using gentle cleaning and polishing.The size and weight of the pendant are shown on thephotographs for this listing.
