ANTIQUE 18TH CENTURY ARCHANGELS O. L. OF PILLAR ST. RITA PILGRIMAGE BRONZE MEDAL:
$174.99

Please note that medal prices vary, based on conditionand appearance. Our Lady of the Pillar was a popular medal amongst 18th CenturySpanish Colonial sailors, and a small catch of these medals was acquired by mymother more than 75 years ago in Puerto Rico, from a treasure hunter who hassince passed away.

This is a gorgeous antique 18th century Italian bronzereligious medallion from my mother's estate collection. One side features SaintRita and the Archangel Gabriel, while the other displays Our Lady of thePillar. It is 1.75 inches long, including the bale, and 14 grams.

Our Lady of the Pillar (Spanish: Nuestra SeƱora delPilar) is the name given to the Blessed Virgin Mary associated with the claimof Marian apparition to Apostle James the Greater as he was praying by thebanks of the Ebro at Caesar Augusta (Zaragoza), Hispania, in AD 40. Thecelebrated wooden image is enshrined at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillarin Zaragoza.

Saint Rita of Cascia (Born Margherita Lotti 1381 -- 22May 1457) was an Italian widow and Augustinian nun venerated as a saint in theRoman Catholic Church. Rita was married at an early age. The marriage lastedfor eighteen years, during which she is remembered for her Christian values asa model wife and mother who made efforts to convert her husband from hisabusive behavior. Upon the murder of her husband by another feuding family, shesought to dissuade her sons from revenge.

This medals dating can be confirmed on pages 2 & 3 ofthe book AN INTRODUCTION TO RELIGIOUS MEDALS, by Bob Forrest, and published byNUMISMATICA INTERNATIONAL in 2004.In addition this book has chapters (outlinedin the table of contents), describing each of the categories of medals, theirpossible place of pilgrimage (acquisition), and origin of the mint where theywere made. We recommend that anyone serious about collecting medals from thisperiod acquire a copy of this book.
