Battersea boxes originated in the Englishvillage of Battersea around 1750. However, factories in other areas,particularly in the English village of Bilston, became a thriving center forproducing similar snuff / pill / patch / trinket boxes that were created byfusing porcelain coatings to the copper frames that were then fired in a kiln.Thus, the term Battersea or Bilston became a generic name for all such boxes.These boxes were both functional and decorative, and were popular as gifts andsouvenirs for travelers, and often given as keepsakes, which accounts for someremaining in mint, unused condition. These late 1700’s handmade pocket sizeflower top painted porcelain boxes are made in a few different sizes and shapes;however, this is the smallest pill box size I have seen, and so appears to havebeen made in very limited quantities. Their rarity stems from not only beingaround 200+ years old, but also from their tiny size, which obviously couldeasily be lost over time. The top of this small piece is about 7/8\" indiameter X 3/4\" tall, and weighs a mere is .3 oz. or 10 grams. The bottomof the base measures about 11/16” and is waisted in the center for bettergrasping. All are hand made withdifferent colors of glazing for the base and attention to details in the handpainted tops. The slightly domed top is hand painted with a red rose in thecenter, surrounded by blue, yellow / purple, and yellow / red flowers with aleaves border. The copper top and bottom rims have turned very dark brown / blackfrom natural aging that validates its age. The tops had a variety ofembellishment designs in classical motifs. These pieces were not signed ordated but can be authenticated by the blackish coloration of the copper rimsthat take a Century+ to darken, examining their hand painted detail, and theirdelicate and distinct size, shape, and colors.

The inside top and bottom show the propercharacteristics of being handmade natural white porcelain with the inside whiteporcelain bottom rim having a tiny slit of naturally occurring kiln firingprocess, and one minuscule 1 cm nick to the outside pink bottom rim thatappears many, many times larger than actual size in the images that exaggeratethe details. Note that most 200+ year old objects have idiosyncrasies. Thebottom rim of the top appears to be in untouched original condition but wasloose fitting to the base, so I added a thin ring of tape to make the top fitsnugly with the base. Perhaps someone long ago slightly expanded the rim as itwas too hard to remove, or the copper expanded slightly from exposure to heatover time? In my opinion, the thin bottom edge of the top could easily becrimped inward to fit tightly if desired, but I have left it untouched, asfound condition save for the thin band of tape at the top of the base. This tiny1700’s pill box would be perfect for any 18th-century, smalls, pill box, folkart, decorator, conversation piece or gift.
