A fascinating look at the membership list for 4years of the Andover, MA November Club, the first Women’s Club in Andover, formedin 1889 by Miss Elizabet Handy.

Thecontents print the names of the Presidents, to include a chronological list ofpast Presidents, the Officers, Committees, Calendar, Department Programs, Rollof Members, In Memoriam, Rules of Procedure Charter and By-laws.

Itis nice to see the 1920-1921 Year book present as the 19th Amendmentwas ratified in August of 1920 so the women’s whose names appear in the YearBook for the first time had the right to vote.

Theprevious owner’s name appears in ink at top margin of each Year Book, E.H. Newton [Ella H. Newton], her name is in the membership list and heraddress appears in the 1930-1931 Year Book as 9 Salem St. She hasannotated the 1930-1931 Year Book with the street address of all the members,and noted 2 names in the 1931-1932 Year Book that resigned.

“Thewoman's club movementwas asocial movementthat took placethroughout theUnited Statesthatestablished the idea that women had a moral duty and responsibility totransform public policy. While women's organizations had always been a part ofUnited States history, it was not until theProgressive erathat it came to beconsidered a movement. The first wave of the club movement during theprogressive era was started by white, middle-class,Protestantwomen, and a second phasewas led by African-American women. These clubs, most of which had started outas social and literary gatherings, eventually became a source of reform forvarious issues in the U.S. Both African-American and white women's clubs wereinvolved with issues surrounding education,temperance,child labor,juvenilejustice, legal reform, environmental protection, library creationand more. Women's clubs helped start many initiatives such as kindergartens andjuvenile court systems. Later, women's clubs tackled issues likewomen's suffrage,lynchingandfamily planning. The clubs allowed women,who had little political standing at the time, to gain greater influence intheir communities.” (see Wiki)

Each pamphlet measures 4 x 8 inches, illustratedprinted wrappers, decorative string binding, various pagination 32, 26, 26, 27pages, faint soiling to covers, some chipping at the extremities (see photos) otherwisein very good condition, the bindings are tight and intact, odor free.
