Alexander M. Haig, Jr. signed this letter, typed on his personalized stationery in 1991, with predictions for the 1992 presidential election: "...we will probably have a one-term Democrat a year from this January.". Haig was President Richard Nixon's Chief of Staff and President Ronald Reagan's Secretary of State and ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 1988.
1988 Presidential candidate makes predictions for the 1992 election.
Typed letter signed "Al" in blue ink. 1p, 8½x11, on Haig's personalized letterhead. Dec. 16, 1991. Addressed to Joseph Fawls, Madeira Beach, Florida. In full: "Dear Joe: Thank you for your letter of November 5th which was awaiting me following extensive travel in Asia during the months of November and December. I very much appreciate your advice on handling the Watergate question and am in the throes of completing the chapters on that subject at this time. Needless to say, many of the questions that you have asked I did not know the answers to. On the other hand, I have devined [sic] sufficient information, I believe, to set the record straight on a number of myths associated with that tragic period of our history. I share your concerns about the current Administration which did not come as a surprise to me. Right now, I would say the President's chances are 50-50 next November but as the economy worsens, and I am afraid it will, these odds will drop to the point that we will probably have a one-term Democrat a year from this January. Unfortunately, the six fellows who are currently running bring with them few, if any, credentials which would offer a promise for the future. I am afraid Bentson [sic] is out of it and that is probably sad. As of this writing, Cuomo who would be formidable seems unable to face the music. Best wishes. Sincerely," The President he deems here to be unlikely for re-election was, of course, President GEORGE H. W. BUSH, Haig's rival for the nomination in 1988. Others mentioned in the letter are former Texas Senator and Vice Presidential candidate LLOYD BENTSEN and New York Governor MARIO CUOMO. Four-star general ALEXANDER M. HAIG, JR. (1924-2010), who served in Korea and Vietnam, is credited with keeping the government going while President Richard Nixon was embroiled in the Watergate scandal. In 1968, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger had appointed Haig as military advisor to the National Security Council. In 1973, Haig replaced H. R. Haldeman as Nixon's Chief of Staff, but resigned six weeks after the President to become Supreme Commander of the NATO forces in Europe (1974-1979). In 1981, Haig was named President Ronald Reagan's first Secretary of State, but unexpectedly resigned in 1982, presumably over disagreements regarding foreign policy. He sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1988. Fine condition.See more material from these signers:GENERAL ALEXANDER M. HAIG JR. See more listings in our MILITARY (2,442) category.
