ABRAHAM LINCOLN CAMPAIGN RIBBON RARE ORIGINAL SILK CIVIL WAR FLAG 1864 34 STARS:
$1750.00

Rare silk campaign ribbon for President Abraham Lincoln in the campaign of 1864. This ribbon features a thirty four star u s flag and the campaign slogan \"Our Union Now and Forever.\" This 160 year old ribbon is in excellent condition with only the slightest of staining in the upper left. The flag, slogan, and fringe portion measures 7 inches tall (with another half inch above a fold at the top) by 2 3/4 inches wide.

An example of this ribbon was on display at the Smithsonian Museum of American History after the Museum\'s 2006-2008 renovation. A screenshot of the Smithsonian website is included in my pics for this listing.

The 34-star flag features a very unusual pattern of four rows of 7 stars, with an additional three stars on either side of the canton. -This could be denoted as a 7-2-7-2-7-2-7 pattern. Kansas was the 34th state to join the Union and was admitted in 1861 shortly after the 1860 election which was won by Abraham Lincoln.

As you know, President Lincoln\'s goal was to restore the Union by getting the states that had seceded to form the Confederate States of America back into the USA, hence the slogan on this ribbon \"Our Union Now and Forever.\"

1864 Election:

Near the end of theAmerican Civil War, incumbent PresidentAbraham Lincolnof theNational Union Partyeasily defeated the Democraticnominee, former GeneralGeorge B. McClellan, by a wide margin of 212–21 in the electoral college, with 55% of the popular vote. For the election, theRepublican Partyand some Democrats created the National Union Party, especially to attractWar Democrats.

Despite some intra-party opposition fromSalmon Chaseand theRadical Republicans, Lincoln won his party\'s nomination at the1864 National Union National Convention. Rather than re-nominate Vice PresidentHannibal Hamlin, the convention selectedAndrew Johnsonof Tennessee, a War Democrat, as Lincoln\'s running mate.John C. Frémontstarted to run as the nominee of the newRadical Democracy Party, which criticized Lincoln for being too moderate on the issue of racial equality, but Frémont withdrew from the race in September and that new party dissolved. The Democrats were divided between theCopperheads, who favored immediate peace with theConfederacy, and War Democrats, who supported the war. The1864 Democratic National Conventionnominated McClellan, a War Democrat, but adopted a platform advocating peace with the Confederacy, which McClellan rejected. The Confederacy seemed to have survival potential in summer 1864, but was visibly collapsing by election day in November.

Despite his early fears of defeat, Lincoln won strong majorities in the popular and electoral vote, partly as a result of the recent Union victory at theBattle of Atlanta. As the Civil War was still raging, no electoral votes were counted from any of the eleven southern states that had joined theConfederate States of America.Lincoln\'s re-election ensured that he would preside over the successful conclusion of the Civil War.

Lincoln\'s victory made him the first president to win re-election sinceAndrew Jacksonin1832, as well as the first Northern president to ever win re-election. Lincoln wasassassinatedless than two months into his second term, and he was succeeded by his vice president,Andrew Johnson, who favored quick restoration of the seceded states to the Union without protection for the former slaves. This led to conflict with the Republican-dominated Congress, culminating inhis impeachmentby the House of Representatives in 1868. He was acquitted in the Senate by one vote.
