Book Synopsis
In May of 1914, Nathan Polonsky and his wife and fourof their children left Cherkasy, Russia, and settled in Brooklyn,NY. Nathan passed away in 1929, and Bessie passed away in 1938. Littlewas known regarding their life before immigrating to America.Other than whisperings of the family being somehow descendedfrom one of the disciples of the Baal Shem Tov, the founder ofChassidic Jewry, there was no family tree or paper trail todocument who their ancestors were.
In the summer of 2008, nearly eighty years after Nathan Polonsky passed away, his great-grandson,Dr. Jeffrey Mark Paull, was preparing a family tree for his son Joshua’s Bar Mitzvah, when he came across a photograph of Nathan’s tombstone. The Hebrew inscription on thetombstone revealed that Nathan was the descendant of two of the most influential early leaders ofthe Chassidic movement – the Shpoler Zeida (the grandfather of Shpola), and Rabbi PinchasShapira of Korets.
Fascinated by this auspicious finding, Dr. Paull embarked on a comprehensive and far-reachinggenealogical research project to uncover the ancient lineage of the Polonsky family. Theresulting book,A Noble Heritage: The History and Legacy of the Polonsky and Paull Familyin America, re-creates the astonishing story of how the Polonsky family’s lost heritage, whichdates back to the famed biblical commentator Rashi (1040–1105) of medieval France, wasrediscovered.
Combining a keen sense of historical insight with a deep admiration for those who came before,Dr. Paull traces his ancestors’ millennial journey across Europe, culminating with theirimmigration to America from Czarist Russia. He brings to light his ancestors’ courage and fiercedetermination, their love for their new country, their remarkable achievements, andtheirassimilation into American culture and society. Family biographies are woven into a story of sixgenerations of the Polonsky family in America.
A Noble Heritage is not merely the retelling of Dr. Paull’s family history, but afascinating historical account of the Jewish people, their centuries-long struggles to survive inEurope and Russia, and the Jewish immigrant experience in America.
Dr. Paull’s exhaustive and meticulous genealogical and historical research was driven by hissearch for spiritual meaning, Jewish identity, and ancestral connection. His research and theresulting book forge ties to an entire estranged contemporary extended Jewish family. Itprovides both current and future generations an educational path to a deeper understanding andappreciation of their illustrious Jewish heritage.
Approbations
In this major contribution to Jewish family history Dr. Jeffrey Mark Paull has recorded the origins, tribulations, and achievements of his branch of an ancient pan-European family, who found themselves in the then Russian Empire in the late 18th century and who ultimately became deeply rooted in the United States where they have flourished and multiplied. Dr. Paull describes their distinguished ancestry and their more recent history with much family pride and a deep humanity. It gives me great pleasure to write this approbation for an outstanding study of a cousinly line.
Dr. Edward Gelles, author of An Ancient Lineage: European Roots of a Jewish Family
This is a most impressive piece of work. This well-researched and fascinating account of the history of the Polonsky and Paull families will be of enormous value to all those interested in Jewish history and genealogy.
Dr. Antony Polonsky, Albert Abramson Professor of Holocaust Studies at Brandeis University
