A-5 Vigilante Reconnaissance AttackAircraft 1979 Photograph Vietnam War Service8X10Original Caption:An overhead aerial view of an RA-5C Vigilante aircraft,Reconnaissance Attack Squadron 7 (RVAH-7) known as the \"Peacemakers of the Fleet\" and was assigned to the USS Ranger (CV 61) from February 21 to September 22, 1979.The Vigilante was introduced by the US Navy during June 1961; it succeeded the Douglas A-3 Skywarrior as the Navy\'s primary nuclear strike aircraft, but its service in this capacity was relatively brief due to the deemphasizing of manned bombers in American nuclear strategy. A far larger quantity of the RA-5C tactical strike reconnaissance variant were also procured by the service.Eight of ten squadrons of RA-5C Vigilantes saw extensive service in the Vietnam War starting in August 1964, carrying out hazardous medium-level post-strike reconnaissance missions.
