965g Arizona Petrified Wood
Petrified wood meaning wood turned into stone, is the name given to fossilized wood or the fossilized remains of terrestrial trees. Petrifaction is the result of a tree or tree-like plants having been replaced by stone via a mineralization process.
This petrified wood is from the late Triassic period about 225 million years old (Chinle formation). At that time Arizona was near the equator on the south western edge of the super-continent of Pangea. The climate was humid and subtropical. The area was a low coastal plain resting between mountains and the sea.

About this item: This item polished with a clearcoat finish on 2 sides. Clear, white, yellow and red quartz. Looks like and ancient petrified piece of lumber.
A common question is why this area in Arizona is known for colorful petrified wood? Ash and debris from ancient nearby volcanos to the west aided in the petrification of this ancient forest.
The brightest colors are obtained when metals such as copper, chromium, cobalt, iron and manganese enter the petrified wood structure. Iron is likely the most common mineral.
Most common mineral is iron. Iron stains can be red, brown, orange and yellow.Copper stains petrified wood in blue or green shades.Shades of green can also be attributed to iron, copper, cobalt, chromium and nickel.Trace amounts of Uranium can be found in some yellow, brown or green petrified wood.Purple and violet color is caused by iron and manganese.Blackish dark colors may be the result of manganese and carbon.Pure silica, silicone dioxide, can be clear, white, tan, or gray. Some petrified wood can also contain white to dark shades of calcite.White color may also may be the result of weathering. Color is bleached out leaving a patina on the rock.
