This lot consists of two envelope fronts thathaveboth been signed on the bottom left corner byGeorge Campbell,8th Duke of Argyll (1823-1900).
The Duke held several offices during the reignof Queen Victoria, includingLord Privy Sealforthree periods of time (from1853 to 1855,from1859 to 1866, and from 1880 to 1881);PostmasterGeneral from 1855 to 1858); andHer Majesty\'sPrincipal Secretary of Statefor India, from late1868to 1874.PLEASE NOTE:These are NOT the entire envelopes.These are the fronts of the envelopes ONLY.The backs of the envelopes were cut off,probably more than a century ago.The two envelope fronts have addresseswritten in ink. They were both addressedtoa medicaldoctor named Roth, whoseaddress was 16AOld Cavendish Street,in London. They are both postmarked 1870.
These items wereoriginally part of a groupof letters fromthe same general periodof time thatweresent to members of afamily named Roth.Oneofthe men,Dr. Matthias Roth, was thefatherof anotable homeopathicphysiciannamedBernard Roth. Together, the father and sonhad a medicalpractice,first at 48WimpoleStreet,and later at38 Harley Street.These items are about 3\" by 5\" each.
