Date Nails were placed in RR ties to indicate the date ofthe tie placement. Letter nailsindicated the type of wood used for the tie in test sections. For the BR&PRR, these letter nails represent Maple, Pine, Red Oak. 2 different varieties of RO for Red Oak. I pulledthese letter nails from ties near the airport in Rochester NY, they are old andrusty but the best of what I have left. if you wonder why the heads are off center on the Maple and Red Oak and not the Pine, try pulling a nail out of a Maple or Red Oak tie, and then pull one out of pine. Big difference. See photos.
