Phan Rang – Air Base / Combat Base

Phan Rang AirBase (also called Thành Sơn Air Base) is a Vietnam People's Air Force (VPAF)(Khong Quan Nhan Dan Viet Nam) military airfield in Vietnam. It is located 5.2miles (8.4 km) north-northwest of Phan Rang – Tháp Chàm in Ninh Thuận Province.

Initiallybuilt by Australian POW’s imprisoned by the Imperial Japanese Army about 1942,the airfield was also used by the French Air Force (French: Armée de l'Air)during the First Indochina War then abandoned in 1954.

The UnitedStates rebuilt the airfield in 1965 and it was used by the Republic of VietnamAir Force (VNAF) and the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War in theII Corps Tactical Zone of South Vietnam.

It was seizedby the Vietnam People's Army in April 1975 and has been in use by the VietnamPeople's Air Force (VPAF) ever since.

Phan Rang Air Base, located in Ninh Thuan Province, Vietnam, was a significant military installation during the Vietnam War. Its importance lay in several key factors:

Strategic Location:

Phan Rang Air Base was strategically located on the central coast of South Vietnam. Its proximity to key areas, such as the southern part of the Central Highlands and the Mekong Delta, made it an important location for both offensive and defensive operations.

Air Operations:

The base served as a major hub for air operations during the war. It was home to various units, including fighter squadrons, reconnaissance aircraft, and transport planes. The base played a crucial role in supporting air missions over South Vietnam and bordering areas.

Tactical Air Command Operations:

Phan Rang was a major facility under the Tactical Air Command (TAC). TAC played a crucial role in coordinating and executing tactical air operations, including close air support, interdiction, and air superiority missions. The base supported TAC's efforts in these areas.

Support for Ground Operations:

The airbase provided critical air support for ground forces engaged in combat. Close air support missions, in particular, were essential for assisting ground troops and responding to threats from North Vietnamese forces.

Logistics and Infrastructure:

Phan Rang had extensive facilities to support logistics and maintenance for a variety of aircraft. This included hangars, maintenance depots, fuel storage, and other infrastructure necessary for the upkeep of military aircraft.

Role in the Tet Offensive (1968):

During the Tet Offensive in 1968, Phan Rang Air Base, like many other military installations in South Vietnam, faced attacks from North Vietnamese forces. The base's defense and response during this period were indicative of its importance in the overall military strategy.

Aerial Surveillance:

The base played a role in aerial surveillance and intelligence gathering. Aircraft from Phan Rang were involved in reconnaissance missions, providing valuable information about enemy movements and activities.

In summary, Phan Rang Air Base was strategically important for its role in supporting air operations, providing air cover for ground forces, and contributing to the overall military strategy during the Vietnam War. Its significance was not only in its direct combat capabilities but also in its broader role within the U.S. military's efforts in the region
