Lineage: Yajiro Master: Kan-nai Sato Disciples: Hayao Sato, Minao Sato Biography: Tsugio Sato was born on January 25, 1908, in Yajiro, Hanomiya, Fukuoka Village, Katta District, Miyagi Prefecture, as the second son of Kan-nai Sato and Fuyo. His mother, Fuyo, was the third daughter of Nishiro Takako of Shiroishi. His uncle was Den-nai Sato, his elder brother was Masao Sato, and his younger brother was Minoru Sato. After graduating from elementary school, Tsugio learned woodturning from his father, Kan-nai. At the age of 19, he left the woodturning business and became a bus driver, driving the route between Shiroishi and Kamasaki. Tsugio is noted for transporting two giant kaya trees from Inako's Oku no Osawa to Shiroishi on his truck, which were requested by Shinichi Kanno, a kokeshi and Shiroishi washi paper researcher, to make drying boards for washi paper. After World War II, Tsugio returned to woodturning in Shiroishi but mainly produced new types of woodturning items and rarely made traditional kokeshi dolls. At the age of 63, in October 1970, he resumed creating traditional kokeshi. He passed on his woodturning skills to his sons, Minao and Hayao.
