Colonel Edward Scammon speaks to the Officers & Soldiers of the 5th,Maine with an emotional farewell to the men of the \"Pine Tree State\", praising their devotion & courage in battles. Similar in format to a General Order, likely printed by the HQ printers in camp, it bears an ink notation at the bottom of the page by a family member of the 5th Maine soldier who saved and mailed it home \"I enclose Brother\'s to me for you to read\". 2pp 8 x 5\" ptd/ink. General & Special Orders were issued tocommunicate commands and information to the Army. Each order, issued in writingby a command, was then printed for distribution to each unit, either at an armydepartment headquarter or by commanders at local headquarters, sometimes in thefield on portable printing presses. The orders were then issued to regiments, often to be read aloud to the troops.

General Orders were printed as issued withdate & location; at the end of a year the regimental adjutant mightretain them loose or simply string bind them by punching holes and stringing on¼” red cloth string tape (the source of the old expression \"government redtape\"). Sometimes an officer or HQ clerk might take a group of orders to alocal print shop or bookbinder and have an accumulation bound with leather orcloth covers.

Usually, American Military Orders of the 19thcentury including Civil War era were printed on an 8 x 5” sheet of quality ragpaper.
