Amazing collection of 111 envelopes, 85 of which contain letters from and to a B-24 radio operator/gunner on a B-24 with the 766th Bomb Squadron, 461st Bomb Group, based in Italy during World War II: SSG Paul C. Rollman. Letters are largely between the aviator and his wife, who lived in Baltimore, Maryland. Begins with the start of his training at Camp Lee, VA, then training squadrons Miami, FL; Sioux Falls Army Air Field, S.D.; Yuma AAF, AZ; Pueblo, CO Army Air Base; then on to Italy in Dec, 1944. Letters from there posted through A.P.O. 785, located in Foggia, Italy. Many letters on various Army Air Force stationery. Lots of interesting content right through the end of the war and his return to the U.S., including possible redeployment to the Pacific theater, which luckily proved unnecessary. Includes letter from a friend who was stationed with the HQS & HQS Squadron, 5th Army Air Force, then in the Philippine Islands. Also 5 photographs of his wife, young daughter and other family taken during the war. SSG Rollman was born on 4/23/1915 and passed away on 10/17/1999. He was a crew member of Crew #56R with the 766 BS, 461st Bombardment Group (Heavy), “the Liberaiders”.
