Here are four small photos of young boys. On the backs is printed \'\'Pickard\'s Penny Photographs South Side Public Square, Winston, N.C.\'\' Winston, North Carolina joined with Salem to form Winston-Salem in 1913, so these photos must date before that time. The photos measure 1 3/8 by 1 1/2 inches, and have been pasted on 2 1/8 by 2 3/4 inch pieces of medium weight card with different colored borders around the image. I don\'t think that these were photo booth photos, but Pickard\'s was evidently some sort of chain. I\'ve found photos online mounted on the same cards, with the Pickard\'s name and location printed on the back in the same way from cities in Tennessee, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. One card gave the hours of the business, confirming my idea that this was a studio.

The subjects are 4 young boys. One with the green border, has a mischievous grim and a big ruggled collar draping unevenly over a wood coat. The other green border card shows a boy with a flag ribbon and 2 pinbacks pinned to his lapel. The brown border shows a serious older boy in a suit and tie. The most interesting is the gray border. - the boy stare boldly into the camera and has a cigarette hanging out of one side of his mouth. He\'s wearing a flat cap, a thick wool jacket with a pinback on the lapel and a sweater underneath.The photos are clear. The green borders have some paper loss and wear, and the smoking boy photo has some damage on the right edge.
