Our Lady of Lapa Figurine

In 1498, in the village of Lapa, municipality of Sernancelhe, Portugal, a shepherdess named Joana, found an image of Our Lady, through the crevices of a boulder. She built a small altar, decorated it with flowers, and paid tribute to her every day. One day Joana\'s mother told her to take the sheep to other pastures where they could be better fed. Joana put the image in her basket and took it with her. Joana\'s mother, seeing her devote so much time to what she thought was a doll, grabbed the image and threw it into the fire. The girl, who was mute by birth, shouted at her mother and managed to remove the image from the fire without getting burned. At the time, Joana\'s mother was paralysed from one arm, but after praying she was healed. All these miracles led to the erection of a chapel in the honor of Our Lady of Lapa, near the cliff where the image was found. Later, the Shrine of Our Lady of Lapa was built by the Priests of the Society of Jesus. Every year, on June 10th, August 15th, and on the first Sunday of September, thousands of pilgrims gather to pay tribute to Our Lady of Lapa.
