Quartz (from Old German twarc - solid) is a mineral from the class of oxides: silicon oxide. The most common mineral on earth. Chemical formula of quartz: SiO2.
Physical properties of quartz
Luster glassy, greasy in the break. Hardness 7. Specific gravity 2.6-2.65 g / cm 3 . Colorless, white, greyish, smoky black, pink, purple, green. Doesn't give a trait. Cleavage is absent. The fracture in quartz is conchoidal with a greasy sheen. Solid dense, loose (quartz sand); in addition, inclusions, individual crystals or druses. The crystals are in the form of a hexagonal prism topped with a pyramid. The crystal faces are covered with transverse hatching. Syngony is trigonal. Crystals overgrown or ingrown. Often contains various inclusions, especially gases and liquids in the form of bubbles.
In Kazakhstan, a rock crystal was found the size of a two-story house, its weight is 70 tons.
In areas where sands are distributed (in deserts), there are crystals and druses of gypsum (pseudomorphoses of quartz after gypsum), penetrated by grains of sand, which gives these formations a greater hardness that is not inherent in gypsum.
Distinguishing features
Characteristic features for quartz are non-metallic luster, high hardness (leaves a scratch on the glass), lack of cleavage. Quartz can be confused with chalcedony, opal, feldspar and nepheline. Chalcedony and opal are distinguished by their waxy luster and dense structure. Feldspar is characterized by perfect cleavage in two directions. Nepheline dissolves in strong sulfuric acid. Rock crystal looks like a colorless topaz. Unlike rock crystal, topaz has cleavage in one direction.
