25\" Japanese Ebony Striking Stick Pillar Wall Clock

Here I\'m offering a very good quality striking stick clock or Shaku-Dokei. The ebony wood case has a removable glazed hood with a lift-outfront door, two fabric-backed gilt-brass pierced frets to the sides, a scale atthe front and a drawer for the key at the bottom. The ebony hardwood case ismade of solid rosewood and it shows beautiful grain of the wood.

Mounted to the backboard is the gilt-brass going movement with finely cut,turned and spoked gear work, turned brass baluster columns at the corners, anelaborately engraved fretted front plate and a verge escapement that isregulated by a small pendulum with a turned, adjustable lenticular bob. Aseparate key wound striking mechanism acts as the weight and drives the one-daytime mechanism.

This is a quite large Japanese stick pillar clock, 24.5\" overall, bigger thanmost stick pillar clocks in any collection.

The engraved gilt-bronze time scale is fastened top and bottom by two largeturned screws, has an engraved brass scale set at the edge, has engravedsilvered \'hour\' characters on shaped plates and brass \'half-hour\' markers.

The pierced and engraved hand is carried by the striking mechanism andpoints to the different characters as it descends through the day. The backs ofthe \'numerals\' extend into the case and trip the striking mechanism at theproper intervals. It follows the Japanese sequence of striking two series ofnine to four alternating one and two strikes at the \'half-hours\'.
