As shown in the photographs, this is an incredible find, a lot of 24 original 8x10” Official Boston & Maine photographs of the catastrophic & fatal wreck of Train Number 30 caused by the derailment of Locomotive 4224 A&B at the Harvard St. bridge in Medford, Massachusetts near the Tufts College Station on November 19 1957. 11 cars were involved, 9 of which were damaged or destroyed. Also, a large section of a building adjacent to the tracks collapsed from the impact of a derailed unit.

The engineer & fireman were killed, and 71 people were injured including other employees and passengers. I don’t believe the photos show the deceased, although many bystanders are gathered so these were taken soon after the wreck. The shot of the front of the locomotive appears to have dark fabric draped over the right front window of the cab, presumably where the engineer was at the time of the accident. The accident was caused by the train going through a turn onto temporary track over the Harvard St bridge at 57mph , which was under construction at the time with a speed restriction of 15mph, causing the EMD F-2 locomotives and several cars behind it to derail as shown. A bulletin had been posted at the station they left from (White River Jct VT) which was acknowledged by The photos were found in the estate of former B&M Supervisor of Communications R.E. McAllister.

The photos are numbered on the back 1-29 but number 15,16,17,21 & 27 are missing. The yellow post it notes denote the corresponding number . They were found rolled up (probably since they were developed) and will be shipped the same way, as shown in the last photo. I just boarded/bagged them to take photos, they aren’t included. This may be a once in lifetime opportunity to get a collection like this.
