It dates to the late 1930's It bears the stamp of the This old Navajo Concho belt with its crossed arrows hallmark is believed to be the work of the well known Navajo silversmith Etsitty Tsosie.  The hallmark has been identified by authors Pat and Kim Messier as it conjugates from Barton Wright, Arch Thiessen and others as it appears on early Navajo silver.  CG Wallace also attributes example in his catalogue to the artist although, as of our knowledge, none of these iconic squash blossoms are known to be hallmarked.   It’s interesting to note the obituary of Etsitty Tsosie (Courtesy Messier: Blog: To Be (Hosteen), or Not To Be, That is the Question…. August 15, 2019;  “Oakland Tribune June 24, 1937”)  which helps us date the period of this artist’s work.

It really is a spectacular early Navajo Concho belt.  Etsitty Tsosie was active from 1910-1937 and passed away in 1937. Best known for his beautiful stamp work and repousse pieces. He worked for trader C.G. Wallace for a period of time and was commissioned to produce stamps. He and Hosteen Goodluck worked closely together creating many of the early concho belts and other detailed pieces of jewelry. Several of his pieces were featured in the C.G. Wallace collection. Mentioned in the John Adair 1944 book, Eskiesose (C.G. Wallace's spelling) preferred to work without strangers watching him, as he insisted his silver would not melt correctly
