2 Norwalk, Ohio Promissory Notes (1 from 1867 & 1 from 1871) with IRS Stamps :

These two interesting American promissory notes both date to the third quarter of the 19th c. The first is from Norwalk, Ohio and is dated Sept. 12, 1867. It is for $1000.00 (a sizable sum in those days). It has a 50 cent Internal Revenue Stamp that has been hand cancelled. It is on hand laid paper and has a small blind stamped crest in the upper left hand corner. It is 7 7/8\" x 4 7/8\". It has folds and a couple of small chips along with some semi-circular cuts on the signatures that I believe was a security measure. The second promissory note is also from Norwalk, Ohio and is dated July 1st 1871. It is for $100.00 and carries a 5 cent Internal Revenue Stamp. It has folds and some tears (see photos). Both notes have pencil and ink calculations, notes and instructions on the reverse sides. It is also 7 7/8\" x 4 7/8\" in size.
