This coin commemorates Operation Acoustic Kitty, a covert program developed by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) during the 1960s as part of their efforts in espionage against the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The aim was to use cats as mobile listening devices to eavesdrop on Soviet conversations.The idea was to surgically implant a microphone and transmitter into a cat, turning it into a clandestine recording device. The cat would then be released near targets to capture and transmit conversations.The operation involved intricate surgeries to place a microphone in the cat’s ear canal, a small radio transmitter at the base of its skull, and a thin wire into its fur to serve as an antenna. This required considerable technical and veterinary expertise to ensure the cat's health and the functionality of the equipment.The program faced numerous practical issues. Training the cats to follow instructions and approach specific targets was extremely difficult. Additionally, the natural independence and unpredictability of cats made them unreliable agents for such precise tasks.The first field test of Acoustic Kitty ended in failure. According to reports, the test cat was hit by a taxi shortly after being released, leading to the abandonment of the project. The CIA concluded that using cats as espionage tools was impractical and infeasible.The project was costly, with estimates suggesting it cost around $20 million.
