Steve GaddRocky WhiteCozy PowellPeter ErskineFour leading drummers, four different styles.Four more reasons for playing Yamaha System Drums.Because I’ve always beenvery concerned with thequality of sound in a drum,I use the Recording CustomSeries drums, with thesebeautiful all-birch shellsand a black piano finish. They give me a very con-trolled resonance with a lotof tone. They let me relaxwith the music, so I canadjust my touch to any vol-ume requirements. Yamahadrums are very sensitive, and there’s always a reserveof sound.I’ve always tended to gofor simple equipment likethe Tour Series snaredrum with eight lugs, be-cause it’s easier for me toget the sound. Same thinggoes for my hardware, whichis why I like the 7 Serieshardware. I don’t requirereally heavy leg bracing sothe lightweight stands arejust fine; very quiet, too. With some drums, thereisn’t too much you can doto alter the sound. Somewill give you a real deepthud, and others are realbright. With Yamaha, I canget both sounds, they’re justvery versatile. Mostly I likea deep round sound withtight definition, since myconcept is that a drum is amelodic instrument likeanything else. I can heardrum pitches, and Yamahalets me achieve that withouta lot of constant re-tuning.As far as their hardware, the snare drum stand andboom stands are very wellthought-out. They feel likethey were designed by adrummer, and they’re notlimited at all. The 9 Seriessnare drum stand’s ball tilt-er is fantastic; you can getthe perfect angle for yourplaying posture. And theboom stand tiller can doubleas two stands because itdoesn’t have a long handle. So the boom slides right in-side the rest of the stand ifyou don’t need it. All in all,Yamaha is the perfect setof drums for tone quality, sound, and ease of set-up.I’d been playing the sameset of drums for ten yearswhen I met up with theYamaha people during atour of Japan with Rainbow.I told them that if theycould come up with a kitthat was stronger, louderand more playable thanwhat I had. I’d play it. Sothey came up with thisincredible heavy rock kitwith eight ply birch shells,heavy-duty machined hoopsand a pair of 26” bassdrums that are like bloodycannons. And since I’m avery heavy player whoneeds a lot of volume.Yamahas are perfect for me.And the sound just takesoff—the projection is fan-tastic so 1 can get a lot ofvolume without straining. There isn\'t an electricguitarist in the world whocan intimidate me. and I’veplayed with the loudest.Yamaha drums just cutthrough better, like a goodstiletto. They have the fat-test. warmest, most power-ful sound of any kit I’veplayed and they can reallytake it. For my style.Yamaha is the perfect all-around rock kit.Yamaha makes profes-sional equipment with theprofessional player in mind. They’re just amazing-sounding drums, and thefact that their shells are per-fectly in-round has a lot todo with it. The head-to-hoopalignment is consistent: thenylon bushing inside thelugs are quiet and stable soYamahas tune real easy andstay in tune. too. I have aSVa\" snare and it’s good asanything out there. It speaksfast, with a really brilliantsound and a lot of power. When you hit it hard, thedrum just pops. And thethrow-off mechanism isquick and agile, with goodsnare adjustment—it’s abasic design that works. And Yamaha hardware isreally ingenious, every bitas good as the drums. 1 likethe 7 Series hardware be-cause it’s light and strong, especially the bass drumpedal, which has a fast, nat-ural feel. What can I say?Everything in the Yamahadrums system is so welldesigned, you want for noth-ing. Once you hook up withthem, you’ll stay with them.13930-8310-65
