SUZUKI GS7SOENThe Competition Has Had Three Years to Catch Up,But the GS is Still the Best 750■ Suzuki put the mo-torcycle world on itsear with the introduc-tion of the GS750three years ago. Afteryears of trying to selthe American publicon two-strokes and in-novative engineering.Suzuki went back to wbasics and built what people were buying-750 Fours. The difference was thatSuzuki’s first large four-stroke was fasterand quicker than anything available in itsclass, and went into the books as the firstbig Japanese multi that handled well.On the surface, the GS750 wasn\'t sodifferent. Four cylinders. Double overheadcamshafts. Roller chain cam drive.Straight-cut gear primary drive. Breakerpoints ignition. Five-speed transmission.Four slide-throttle carburetors. Doubledownlube frame. Disc brakes front andrear. Aside from an automatic cam chaintensioner, the Suzuki possessed nothingsome other bike already on the marketdidn\'t have. The difference was in function. TheSuzuki wasn’t radically new and different.Il just worked better than anything elseavailable, delivering more power, morespeed, a lower ET at the drag strip, and thebest suspension/frame/handling packageever to come out of Japan.Function is the key to the GS75O. Know-ing that, it is easy to understand whySuzuki\'s version of a deluxe 750. theGS750EN. looks conservative comparedto the semi-chopperized customs and spe-cials sold in shipload lots by the other threemajor Japanese firms. The EN is simplythe best 750 Suzuki engineers know how tobuild, with cast alloy wheels, dual frontdisc brakes, a modestly-stepped seal anddifferent paint setting it apart from theGS750N.Aside from the details setting off theGS750E. there have also been changes inthe basic GS75O since its introduction.Perhaps the most significant alterationswere made in carburetion to comply withemissions control regulations. Suzuki wentto close-tolerance 26mm Mikuni slidethrottle carburetors beginning with theGS750C (1978) model. The new carbs.while identical in nominal size to the26mm Mikunis formerly used, were builtwith closer tolerances in jets and circuits.That\'s because altering jetting is now pro-hibited by law. and motorcycles must comewith preset carburetion. Because no ad-justments for normal production-line dif-ferences are allowed, tolerances must becloser to begin with.At the same time, jetting changes weremade as well, changes again motivated byemissions standards. The GS750B came with a # 100 mainjet. 0-6 needle. 5F21-3 jet needle, and # 15pilot jet. The GS75OC (1978) and GS750N(1979) carburetors were changed to a# 102.5 main jet, 0-4 needle. 5DL36-2 jetneedle and # 15 pilot jet. What that all means is that the GS750Nis leaner al the small throttle openingsusually encountered in EPA emissions testmodes. The dual-taper 5DL36-2 jet needleis initially leaner, secondarily richer tosmooth the transition from idle to off idle,(or from small, steady-stale carb openingsat low speeds to gentle acceleration, asencountered in traffic). The float level wasalso lowered between the GS750B andGS750N. from 26mm to 24mm.Other changes span a wide range ofcomponents. One-piece front brake discsreplaced two-piece riveted discs (one-piecediscs look cleaner and also dissipate healGS750\'s two-valves-per-cylinder, dohe over-square engine makes excellent power with-out overbearing complexity.13979-AL-7904-08
