Another Record Broken:FORD COURIERGreat mileage and a very comfortable rideFord has broken themileage barrier. Untilthe 1979 Courier camealong, the \'79 SubaruBRAT (PV4, Sept., ’79)had held PV4’s fuelmileage record by es-tablishing 29.8 mpgover this magazine’s 20percent city/ 80 percent freeway testloop. Equipped with the standard singleoverhead-cam 122-cid (two-liter) four-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual trans-mission and 3.31:1 axle, the little Fordachieved 30.5 mpg, 2.2 mpg better thanits twin, the Mazda B2000 (PV4, March,’79). Both Mazda and Courier share thesame assembly line at Toyo Kogyo, theparent plant in Japan and except forsome trim differences, the basic trucksare identical. However, the Mazda hasonly one engine choice, the Courier,two. In fact, the Mazda tested wasequipped with the same powertrain asthe Courier: 122-cid Four, 5-speed over-drive and 3.31:1 axle. In performance,the Courier was just a tad slower thanits brother and the difference in mileagewe attribute to the fact that the Mazdawas brand new while the Courier hadbeen thoroughly broken in with severalthousand miles.Compared to the standard ’78Courier, the basic ’79 is not only moreeconomical but probably quicker too.This year, Ford has replaced the here-tofore base 110-cid Four with a boredand stroked version of Mazda’s 1800-cccar engine. Displacing 122 cubicinches, the new engine has increasedhorsepower over the 1978 from 66 at4500 rpm (Calif., 67) to 77 horsepowerat 4300 rpm (Calif., 72 hp at 4300) andtorque has also increased from 92 Ib-ftat 3000 rpm to 109 Ib-ft at 2400 rpm...13963-AL-7911-70
