16" x 20" Signed Art Printof The Centenery Female College in Cleveland, Tennesseeby E. Howard Burger
Centenary Female College, sponsored by the Holston Confer-ence, Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was named to com-memorate the hundredth anniversary of organized Methodism inAmerica. It was chartered April 1, 1885, and located in Cleveland. The first kiln of brick was fired October 1884, and construc-tion begun April 1885. The main building on the six-acre campuswas three stories high with a half mansard roof. School openedSeptember 10, and the building was dedicated October 24, 1885.President David Sullins was aided by eight faculty members. Anorth wing, with chapel, was begun in 1887, and a south wing, with library, was under construction the next year. The college was an integral part of the community, andClevelanders showed many courtesies to Centenary students. While prospects for the future were good, tradegy struck. OnFebruary 9, 1907, between 1:00 and 2:00 a.m. a fire began in thelaboratory, spread rapidly through the main building, totally de-stroying it. The two wings were badly damaged. Fortunately allstudents escaped injury.Friends responded with generous contributions, and recon-struction begun. By October 1907, it was reported that “the newbuilding is up. and the college is prettier than ever, better fur-nished and better equipped."The school was given a new lease on life and prospered foranother decade. In 1917 it was sold to pay its debts and waspurchased by its trustees. The following year, these men re-turned the college to the conference. In 1928 Miss Flora Brysonleased the preparatory and junior college for a year. Centenaryclosed in December 1929.On February 8, 1930, the college was leased for three yearsby the Smoky Mountain Schools. In 1933 the campus was ac-quired by Bob Jones College, and in 1947 by Lee College. Themain building was razed in 1963. The year 1974 marks theninetieth year of Christian higher education on this campus, andfor half this period, it bore the name of Centenary College. The Cleveland National Bank is grateful to Dr. William R. Snell, assistantprofessor of history, Lee College, for researching and compiling the above. Dr.Snell is a native Alabamian, and received his doctorate at the University ofAlabama. He is married to Jan Warren, and they have two children. Michael andJeffrey. The Cleveland National Bank presents E. Howard Burger,a native East Tennessean, who is the artist of "The Monu-ment," the first in a series of drawings of well-known andlocal historical sites in this area being planned during thenext several months.E. Howard Burger, now a resident of Cleveland, wasborn and reared in East Tennessee and was a freelanceartist in this area prior to moving to Washington, D.C.,where he was a member of the Robinette Art Studios until1939.He did commercial art in Washington, studied electricalengineering at George Washington University and workedthirty-two years for the Chesapeake and Potomac TelephoneCompany before retiring and reverting to his first love ofpainting. In addition to his career with C & P, Burger studiedat the Corcoran Gallery in Washington and illustrated a salesmanual used by the Bell System. The artist enjoys work in pastels, watercolors, and oilsbut finds watercolors most satisfying. His attention to de-tail characterizes the realism of his paintings, but the deli-cate quality of his watercolors reveals his greatest talent. This is the reason The Cleveland National Bank selectedMr. Burger for this series of drawings.

In April of 1973 The Cleveland National Bank and E.Howard Burger entered into an agreement whereby Mr.Burger would produce a series of drawings of memorablesites in this area, and prints of these would be distributedby the bank. The artist is a native Tennessean, having been born andhaving grown up just outside Bradley County. He was a freelance artist at the age of fifteen. An electrical engineer by profession, he has never losthis keen desire to sketch and paint. After thirty two yearswith the telephone company, he retired to pursue his firstlove—painting the beauty of landscapes and historicallandmarks, particularly in Bradley County.Mr. Burger’s trademark is authenticity. He spends asmuch time in preparation for a painting as doing the paint-ing itself, taking innumerable photographs, makingsketches, and doing research. It is felt that you will enjoy this latest print to the sameextent that previous ones have been received. The Cleve-land National Bank is proud to play this part in perpetuat-ing the memory of a past era.
