The Dodge Colt is more than just another Japanese-madeimport. It sports an engine that, for all practical purposes, isa mini version of an overhead-cam Chrysler Hemi. Hemis-pheric combustion chamber designs are known for theirefficiency and performance potential. This feature combinedwith the simplicity and rigidity of the overhead cam valve-actuating assembly would seem to give the Colt engineconsiderable performance potential. Bob Keller and WolfSchlegel of Turbonics, Inc., taking note of these designqualities decided to measure the volumetric efficiency of thisengine to find out how good an air pump it really is (allengines are basically air pumps). Measuring the actual airflow showed that the efficiency ranged as high as 98 percentas opposed to the normal 80-90 percent for inline valveengines. This finding indicated to the two researchers thatthe little engine would be capable of really fantastic per-formance if properly engineered and they decided toinvestigate further.Using a local dyno, Schlegel and Keller ran a base line testshowing 46 hp at the rear wheels between 4000 and 4500rpm. Then they added a turbocharger and with 10 poundsboost and an open exhaust, but no other engine changes, they recorded 110 hp at the rear wheels on the same dyno. When you more than double the horsepower with a relatively \'simple bolt-on-charge, you’ve got something. ,It all started with a meeting of the minds between Norm iand Lenny Kraus of Grand Spaulding Dodge, Bill Stein andBob Van Arken of Rockville Center Dodge in Long Islandand the two turbocharger experts from Turbonics. The onlyspecific intention was to prepare a performance packagewhich could not be recognized from outside as being any-thing but stock. It was a requirement that would make theinstallation quite a bit more difficult, but the boys were ableto work around it. As it turned out, the battery wound up inthe trunk and they had to make up a special exhaust mani-fold, since the stock outlet points downward and the mani-fold cannot be successfully inverted. However, the new ex-haust manifold does double duty as a base for the turbo. Thecarburetor and pressure regulating device are mounted in thearea vacated by the battery and the compressor output ispiped across the engine, over to the stock intake manifold.Had a bubble in the hood been allowed, the turbocharger, together with a carburetor assembly, could have been placeddirectly over the intake manifold. This would insure a shortdirect connection for the air-fuel mixture eliminating theneed for water and heat in the crossover pipe and under thecarburetor. The turbocharger is based on an AiResearch unit normallyfound on some International Harvester, Mack truck orLycoming aircraft engines. It has, like most turbochargers ofthis class, a center housing with full-floating bearings, a com-pressor section which helps boost the engine, and a smallturbine driven by the engine’s exhaust gas which powers thecompressor. The turbines and compressor impeller are mounted on acommon shaft, with no connection to the engine. At idle, when there is very little exhaust gas flow, the turbine andcompressor spin freely. At part throttle, the exhaust gas flowincreases. The escaping gas turns the turbine which thencauses the compressor to spin faster and the compressorstarts helping the engine breath. For instance, instead ofrunning seven or eight inches of manifold vacuum at part...13956-AL-72FLL-69
