Some weeks ago, how-ever, the editorial director came in andasked if I’d mind jotting down a fewimpressions on my new Capri V-6. Heeven said something about the possi-bility of doing a test on the car.Although I’ve driven many cars andhave written a number of evaluations,the idea of divulging my feelingsabout my own vehicle started methinking about how and why out of allthe cars manufactured, I ended upwith this one.I first acquired more than a passinginterest for the Capri after I had myfirst in-the-flesh look at this uniquenew European ponycar while travelingthrough Great Britain. Since I havealways been a foreign car enthusiast,seeing a proper-sized and well laid outEuropean sporty car had strongappeal. What’s more, with the engineoptions available, the English andGerman versions of the Capri weredownright fast.At the time of my visit to England Ihad, among other things, been comb-ing the countryside for a suitable carthat I could bring home to the States.Unfortunately, though the Capri metmy specifications almost perfectly,there was just no way I could get itcertified as “smog legal.” Thus, myonly consolation was to wait andwatch for the introduction of the carin this country.As 1 had expected, it took only afew months for the Capri to make itsdebut here. But the car I received fortesting early in 1970 wasn’t the car forme. First, it was equipped with themodest 1 600cc English engine, hardlyadequate for freeway cruising. Second,it didn’t have full instrumentation likethe deluxe European models. Figuringthat the 1 600 powerplant would soonbe dropped, I waited for Ford to bringin a larger displacement engine and,hopefully, a fully-instrumented dash.Shortly after the 1600 hit the mar-ket, Lincoln/Mercury added a 2000ccoverhead cam engine to the lineup. Butfor me it was too noisy at cruisingspeeds and didn’t offer the refinement Iwanted. Also, the dashboard wasidenti-cal to the 1 600 model. At this point Iconcluded that the Capri 2000 wouldremain as the top of the line car and thatwould be that.My aspirations consequently turnedto owning other imports like themarvelous 240Z or BMW 2002. Thesecars all had a wonderful air of qualityabout them that greatly impressed me.So much, in fact, that 1 finally had myname added to one of those mile-long,six-month waiting lists for the popular“Z” car. But, as things would have it,just after I had been put on the list, Igot a call from Bob Bierman in thepublic relations office at Lincoln/Mercury in Detroit, inviting me tocome to Dearborn for an exclusivepeek at the only Capri 2600 V-6 inthe U.S. Without giving it a secondthought, I hopped on the first planeto Motown.When I arrived at the Dearbornproving ground there sat a bright red...
