I\'m selling my Schwinn Stingray bike with the 3-speed rear hub. With an LFXXXXX serial number, it was manufactured by Schwinn in Chicago in November of 1970. This bike is in all original condition and is unrestored. It is rare to find a 3-speed Stik Shift Stingray from the early 1970\'s, especially in the color red.
The flamboyant red paint is factory original and in excellent shape. The paint does have some very minor scratches, and road rash, but there is no touchups and none of the typical chain rash on the lower frame bar and it still has a great shine. It has the original Schwinn metallic red PVC handle bar grips, the original rear sissy bar, the original Gulco 24 rear reflector, and even the original Schwinn brand Slik rear tire.
The seat is an original Persons silverglow banana seat with the Stingray tag. It does have some wear and signs of aging and discoloration, but no tears or cuts otherwise. The vinyl is still soft and pliable and has a nice overall matching patina to the bike.
The chrome is also in very good shape and is very shiny. Both rims have very nice chrome and roll very smoothly. The front and rear rims are the correct Schwinn factory rims. The rear rim is stamped \"SCHWINN TUBULAR S-2\" and has the correct single knurling. The front is stamped \"SCHWINN TUBULAR S-7\". The rims are in excellent shape with no curb dings and no rust, and minimal brake burn. Both rims are very true and round.Mechanically, the bike is in great shape, and looks fantastic.
I have cleaned and re-greased the front wheel, crank, and headset bearings so all moving parts rotate smoothly. The Stik Shift shifts well into all 3 gears. I added an NOS Sturmey Archer shift indicator rod with spring and chain to the rear hub. The pedaling is crisp, and the brakes stop well. The front brake pads are two NOS Weinmann 6-bump pads that I just installed, and the rear are a nice pair of original Weinmann 7-bump pads.
The rear tire is the original made in USA Schwinn brand 20\" x 2.125\" Slik - it is date coded to October of 1970, and is the tire it came from the factory with! This tire is in great shape, with minimal wear and signs of aging, and is still soft and pliable. The front tire is an original date coded 20\" x 1-3/4\" brickwall Schwinn tire. The front tire is still very soft and has great tread. The front tire does have some cracks in it.
There has never been any damage to this bike. It is in very nice shape overall and perfect for a collector or someone who appreciates the older Schwinn muscle bikes. These bikes are very collectible and will always hold their value. These were some of the highest quality bikes ever made in large production quantities, and they last forever.
See pictures for details. Shipping is vis UPS Ground in a 58\" long x 28\" high x 8\" wide box that weighs 55 lbs. I will need to lower the seat all the way and remove the front wheel and handlebars to fit the bike into the box. I will use foam insulation on the frame to protect the paint during transits. Bike is also available for pickup in Wilmette, IL which is 15 miles north of downtown Chicago.
