GABRIELVOISIN’S1934"AERO SPORT”After World War One, many aircraft firms turned to cars.Most talented and eccentric of the aircraft designers wasGabriel Voisin whose single and multi-engine aircraft had beenthe backbone of the bombardment squadrons of the FrenchAir Force in the 1914-18 war. Early fame attached to thispioneer aircraft designer-builder: the first German airplaneshot out of the skies fell to the nose gunner of a Voisin nearVerdun, and when the first Avion-Voisin car went on sale in1919, Voisin’s reputation as a self-assured artist-engineer wason par with that of Bugatti.From his first to last car, Voisin was wedded to the silkyquietness of C.Y. Knight’s double-sleeve valve engines. Voisin,though head of his large factory in Issy-les-Moulineaux in factas well as name, did most of the design work on Ills first car, a136-inch wheelbase sedan with disc wheels, servo-assistedmechanical brakes front and rear, and a single plate clutchwith a four-speed gearbox driven by a long stroke (95 x 140mm.) four-litre, four-cylinder engine. A finned aluminumcover over the separate cylinder heads, a combined generatorand starting motor — a “dynastarter” — and full pressurelubrication for the five main bearings were Voisin features. Noother car maker obtained the refinement with sleeve valveengines as did Voisin. The first 18 hp (taxable) model wassupplemented by a two-litre 60 x 110 mm. model on 112-inchwheelbase chassis which featured a single aluminum castinghousing the crankcase, clutch and a tliree-speed gearbox andwas designated the C4. In their initial competition, a team ofC4s took the top three places in the 1922 Grand Prix forTouring Cars.Beautifully built, luxuriously appointed, and invariably a bitbizarre in appearance, Voisins almost always had the heavychassis frame in unit with hardwood-framed, aluminum-sheathed bodies which were designed by Voisin himself. Thismarque was a favorite with individualists like the late RudolfValentino who tended to be as chauvinistic as the manufac-turer who once said of American cars: “U.S. cars are ghastly;heaps of old iron. Sardine tins. They overheat, they lookterrible, they won’t hold the road.” This observation camefrom Gabriel Voisin in the late twenties after he had visitedAmerican automobile factories. However, he admired theKnight engines and they were as American in origin as applepie. One can’t help wondering what Voisin would say today ofour obese, overpowered and overweight American cars.Through the thirties a wide range of 4, 6 and straight 8cylinder Voisins appeared.
