Peoria TTEDDIE MULDER, Triumph’s num-ber-one rough rider, dropped in atPeoria to ride his third TT “Na-tional” this year and went away with allthe money—again, for the third time thisyear. Actually, this marks his fourthstraight National TT victory, as Mulderwon at Peoria last year, too.The affair at Peoria was a carbon-copyof previous Mulder wins this season, forthe flamboyant Eddie flew away from thefield. From a perfect start, he rushed intothe lead and was never headed. There wereno real challengers in sight when Mulderdid his usual wheelie across the line to takethe flag. The 1965 Peoria TT saw Bart Markelnipping at Mulder’s heels all the way, butalthough Bart again finished second, hefollowed far enough behind to avoid thespray of s^nd and rocks from the Tri-umph’s back wheel—though probably notout of choice.Chris Draayer again had problems. Asat the last National TT, Draayer movedrapidly into second place behind Mulder, only to fall by the wayside with mechani-cal troubles. In Draayer’s case, it is prob-ably a pure matter of bad luck, for Chris isa very smooth rider who does not appearto be at all hard on the equipment. He isone of the best first-year Experts we haveseen.Frustration was the lot of a couple ofother former Peoria TT winners. DickMann’s faithful old Matchless, which hasmore miles behind it (all racing) than theaverage 10-year-old family sedan, expiredin the 12th lap. Dick Hammer, who wonhere in 1962, did not finish near enough toheat-winner Eddie Mulder to make themain event.Hammer was not alone. Only the firstfour out of each heat-race qualified for themain, and Roger Reiman, Ralph White,Skip Van Leeuwen, Bobby Winters andJack O’Brien didn’t get close enough to thefront of the line. And there were plenty oftop-ranking riders who were eliminated inthe time-trials that preceded the heat races.Gene Romero and Chris Draayer were theonly first-year experts to ride their way intothe final. Those who did not go to Peoria mightlike to know that an ABC-TV cameracrew was there to record the event for the“Wide World of Sports” show. Race high-lights will be seen on network television inthe near future.Mulder won his heat, as we have said.Other heat winners were Jim Corpe, theonly rider on a BSA to make the final; andRonnie Rail, who usually rides a BSA,switched to Triumph for this event.Markel’s second-place finish might nothave given him unalloyed joy; there wasconsiderable satisfaction for him in thepoints he collected toward the NationalChampionship. Bart looks to be a sure betfor the National title and the big ONE onDraayer and Market in pursuit of Mulderthe number plate again next year. Thatwould make him the third rider in AMAhistory to win the title three times. Con-sidering that Markel is one of the mostdurable and hard-working riders in racing, there is a strong possibility, too, that hewill win it at least once niore. The Peoria TT rang down the curtain onthe round of Nationals in the midwest. From there, all of the top riders move toCalifornia for the final trio of west coastNationals that will close the 1966 season. As the points were tallied after the PeoriaTT, Markel was at the top, with GaryNixon second, Eddie Mulder third, andChris Draayer in fourth. 4RESULTS20-LAP HEAVYWEIGHT NATIONALCHAMPIONSHIP TT RACEPEORIA.
