Italy is also notable for volup-tuous women, racing cars and rac-ing motorcycles. Somehow, all thesej things seem to have focused in one| area with the development of theDucati Mark III, properly and affec-, tionately called Diana. This swinger attracts your eyeright away. There\'s no more attrac-tive production machine to befound. A huge, over four-and-a-halfgallon tank is sculptured to mini-mize its mass and blend from thelarge, browed headlight nacelleback into the long, comfortable sad-dle. Its bright, Italian Racing Redtank is tastefully trimmed in silverwith yellow striping. The silver, with a bluish cast, duplicates thetones of the slim, sports-type fend-ers, light nacelle and triangular toolboxes. The frame, chainguard andother chassis parts are in gleamingblack, with polished alloy, brightdie-cast engine components andchromed items providing the finalsplash of brilliance. The balance ofpaint and chrome or brightwork isso well planned as to exhibit a mas-ter\'s touch and a Ducati Diana mightwell be owned as a piece of art.No mere showpiece, Diana is athoroughbred workhorse. Her en-gine is outstanding and deservesdetailed inspection. The shortstroke, single cylinder design allowshigh revs without encountering cri-tical piston speeds. This is also facili-tated by an overhead camshaft, lightening the valve train to inhibitfloat at top rpm. Short rockers workoff the ball bearing supported cam-shaft, working the valves against\"mousetrap\" (hairpin) springs in thehemispherical combustion chamber. The large bore permits largervalves, and on the latest modelMark III, the inlet valve size hasbeen upped %-inch to a whopping1%-inch diameter. Valve adjustmentis made by slipping the correctlyshimmed cup over the end of thevalve stem, thus no possibility ofadjusting screws loosening at criticalmoments exists. 12912-AL-6604-13
