George Wolfe And TheClayton Trophy TrialThe Clayton Trophy Trial was held 5thAugust, in the Derbyshire hills and moun-tains near Buxton, Derbyshire. It was or-ganized and run by the Wood Green andDistrict club of Wood Green, an east Lon-don suburb. As is usual with the nationaltrials and most others over here, it waswell organized. The club members mustbe really enthusiastic to organize and runan event that is nearly two hundred milesfrom their home area. The event started at 10:30 a.m., on avery nice Sunday morning. The nearly 275solo entries were sent off at half minuteintervals and then the sidecars were sentoff ten minutes later at one minute in-tervals. .We were away all right, and had a niceeasy ride of five or six miles to the firstgroup of subs (sub-sections) al a rockyuphill stream-bed called Checks. Afterwatching several of the tail-end solos, anda few of the earlier chairs we had ourtry. The section was divided into threesubs and is considered pretty lough byeven the best. We stopped on the firstsub, but fooled through the second thenstopped again in the third sub. None ofthe chairs cleaned the third sub-sectionalthough Alan Morcwood, with his wifeas the passenger, got through with asingle dab.The next section was Robinson’s Rocks, which is a big rock filled stream bed andit is quite a job to get to (real goodenduro stuff) . Wc fared poorly there toowith a five and a three. Then back up toWicken Walls, with its two subs in a rockstrewn uphill gully, at one time a carttrack. We were fortunate and did betterhere, cleaning both the subs.On then a short distance to Greenwood, another steep downhill rock filled gullywhere we suffered a big hole in a crunch-ing encounter with some Derbyshire lime-stone.We carried on then through severalmore sections, comprising six sub-sectionsand arrived at Tenterhill after a typicalstretch of rocky and steep, downhill trackbetween and along stone walls, whichhave stood for many, many years. Tenter-hill is a steep uphill climb over loose rockand steps. It’s usually divided into threesub-sections, but this year it was one longsection of about a hundred yards. Themajority of chairs cleaned this though, in-cluding us.Next was Hollingsclough, the bone ofthe chairs and nearly all the solos. Nosidecars have cleaned this rock filled uphillgully in many years, although years agoit was regularly cleaned by chairs andeven three wheeled cars. But weather, time, and countless spinning wheels haveleft it a mass of loose boulders and rockysteps, up which few riders have been ableto ride without heavy footing or stoppingcompletely. It’s about a hundred yardslong and is usually divided into threeor four subs, the worst being the bottom, the first sub. The weather was nice thisyear and many of the solos managed toclean the three subs. Chances looked goodfor the chairs and although none of themcleaned it two got through the first subwith a loss of three marks and Alec Wright(who won the Welsh Three Day, sidecarclass) dropped only one mark on the firstsection, was clean in the second but slop-ped in third, for a total of six. PeterRoydhouse, 500 Norton was best on I lol-lingsclough, dropping only three total allon that first and worst sub. We managedit with a loss of six. total. On then to the next section but manyof the riders got lost for a few minutesdue to route cards being lorn down orturned around (oh yes, the clubs have thattrouble here, too). We and several otherchairs were among the lost, but soonfound our way and went on to the nextsection and then the special lest, used tobreak any possible ties. After a few more sections, reached aftercrossing some of the Derbyshire moors onnarrow dirt tracks and foot paths, thennarrow but paved roads we went throughthe small town of Longnor, where thePemrose Trial starts (I’ve ridden it twicenow). Then on over some more pavedroads down and then up some real hills,to the last section, called Dow Low. Thisis a real stopper for most chairs, althoughit appears easy at first. It’s a series ofsharp left and right hand turns over out-crop limestone rocks, in a walled, grasscovered lane. The grass is usually dampand soon the rocks become very greasyand wheel spin stops most of the chairsalthough a couple overturn, on the couplesteep cambers near the end of the section.Wc get over the hardest part but stopwith wheel spin on a small area of wetgrass between the rocks.Ji’s over now with a couple miles of easy...14325-6301-23
