Eddie moran, riding like an expert, wonthe 70-mile race for novices over a fieldof 69.The Farmingdale, N.J., rider was veryconsistent and never rode worse than thirdduring the 35-lap ride round the two-mileroad course. First, Ronald Knepper’s Tri-umph charged into the lead. He wasquickly supplanted by pole sitter KennethHayes’ Norton. Then Colboch’s machinetook over at lap 16 and held the lead un-til the lurking Moran moved in for thebig prize. He put his BSA ahead on the32nd lap and stayed there to beat run-ner-up Ken Colboch of Morristown, Tenn.Moran covered the distance in 57 min-utes, .37.49 seconds at an average speed of72.927 mph. This was a record since thetricky first turn has been rebuilt sincelast year, allowing the riders to proceedat a much more rapid pace into the in-field.The first six finishers were all in thesame lap at the end of the race whichwas run in warm sunny weather.Moran said after the race that he wasconfident throughout that he could win it.“My machine ran perfectly from startto finish, and I had a feeling that I couldlake charge whenever I had to.”Results 70-Mile Novice RaceTime: 57:37.49—72.927 mph1.Edward Moran, Farmingdale, N.J.
