Fourth place Larry Palmgren leads Bill Haast (who wound upthird), Digger Helm and Jim Hayes.Early leader Roger Reiman tippy-toes through the turn ahead ofNo. 68 John Platchek (who later crashed) and No. 19 WarrenSherwood.No. 60 John Tibben is pressured by No. 17 Tom Allen and No.50 Tony Murguia during 200-miler.26th Annual AMADAYTONAEuropean-style road racing comes to the AMA.PHOTOS BY ALICE BIXLERSecond place finisher Larry WilliamsonTony Murguia led 36 laps in all.White, his machine showing the scars of an earlier spill , motors past fifth place James Varnes.Never farther back than fifth place.Ralph White played a waiting gamethat paid off to the tune of $3000 in the26th annual running of the Daytona 200-Mile National Championship race, firstbig win for the San Diego, Californiacollege student. Plagued by a fall early inthe event, he made up ground quickly andtook over first place on lap 74. when DickHammer retired with engine problemsafter assuming the lead from Tony Mur-guia. Murguia had earlier relinquishedhis front running position during a sched-uled pit stop and then regained the ad-vantage, only to fall victim to a flat tire.Fast qualifier White, third place fin-isher in the Florida classic last year, rodesmoothly and consistently to average 77.67mph over the 6-turn, two-mile course onhis Leonard Andres-tuned Harley-David-son, winding up 1 Vi laps ahead of se-cond place Larry Williamson, on aTriumph. Daytona’s demanding road racecircuit, which utilizes parts of the big ovaland also winds through the infield, allowstop speeds of 135 mph in one section andforces a low gear, 25 mph, 90-degree turnin another. The ecstatic winner, compet-ing with his left wrist in a leather bracefrom an earlier injury, remarked. “It onlyhurt when I shifted gears.”Of the original 64-man field, a mere18 completed the fastest-ever 200-milegrind before a sparse crowd of 5.500.Higher speeds, due partly to changes in thecourse, were credited mainly to the at-tractive. streamlined fairings now approvedfor AMA road racing, which gave a sleeknew look to the field and altered ridingstyles considerably. Most of the fairings, including those of the first three finishers, were designed and manufactured by SonicPlastics. Inc. of Hayward, Calif. In sharpcontrast to the big handlebar, pavement-sliding. foot-down technique utilized for-merly. most of the entrants adhered to thestrict European-type feet-up cornering, oc-casionally dabbing an inquisitive toetoward the track to gauge their degree oflean. New high-hysteresis Avon tires, feltto have greatly increased stability and cor-nering speeds, received high praise frommany riders.Among the missing at the checkeredflag were four early leaders, Sid Payne,Roger Reiman, Murguia and Hammer, with Hammer turning in the day’s mostspectacular ride. Starting 37 seconds latedue to a wrench mixup in the last-minutechange from warmup to racing plugs,Hammer bored through traffic like a dia-mond-pointed bit, assuming 16th place bylap three and never slackening his pace.Few accidents marred the 200-miler, andonly John Platchek of Pottstown, Pa., re-quired hospitalization after sustaining afractured leg in a collision with DarrelDovel on the 22nd lap. Following Whiteand Williamson into top ten scoring posi-tions were Bill Haast, Larry Palmgren,James Varnes, Warren Sherwood. DonnellShiftlett, Ronnie Rail, Ronnie Doyle andJohn Tibben. The Amateur 100-Mile event was co-featured on Saturday with the first-ever100-Mile Open 250cc race for Experts,Amateurs and Novices; neighboring Cali-fornians Bud Stubbs and Dick Hammershared the winners’ spotlight on theirHarley-Davidsons, Stubbs aboard an un-faired 750cc twin in the amateur race andHammer on a “very Italian” Sprint in theOpen 250. Stubbs, who collected $650 forhis efforts, toured the 100 miles at anaverage speed of 73.24 mph to wipe outJody Nicholas’ old record of 69.76, set in1961. Harley-mounted Dick Guglielmanawas 53 seconds behind Stubbs at thechecker, followed by Bill Lloyd andCanada’s Don Haddow, both on Triumphs.Nearly one hundred machines rolled tothe line to do battle in the 250 Opendivision, and a considerable variety ofequipment was in evidence. Twelve dif-ferent makes of machines were represent-ed. most of them faired. With such anabundance of talent, rivalry was indeedheated — and extremely close — contrib-uting to numerous spills, although noneof them were serious. At the outset. TomClark forged to the front but first RalphWhite and then Roger Reiman overtookhim; when Reiman fell out on lap 19.Hammer settled into the number one spot. His leadership was sharply challenged atseveral points, however. Mert Lawwillfought through traffic to make a strongoffer before falling prey to mechanical dif-ficulties with his Sprint, and later in therace Hammer repelled a valiant cry byHonda-mounted Buddy Elmore, who laterdropped out with timing gear problems.Hammer, recipient of a S900 purse, wound up 28 seconds ahead of JessThomas (Honda). Jim Hayes (Ducati)and Tony Woodman (Parilla). It is un-fortunate that no further 250 Open com-petition is scheduled for upcomingNational road races this season, after suchenthusiastic Daytona response to thenewly-formed category. The 70-Mile Novice race proved to bea winning debut for BSA’\" -,:w unit-con-struction 500cc model in the capable handsof 22-year-old Ed Moran, a foreign cardealer from Farmingdale. N.J. Moran, after running third throughout most ofthe race, overtook front runner KennethColboch on the 32nd lap of the 35-lap...
