FOUR day holiday feast for thespectator can mean a very goodtime watching racing but for the competi-tor faced with possibly three meetings itcan turn into a nightmare trying to findtime to fettle the raceware overnight be-tween meetings. However, all usually goeswell and we get a first class helping ofmotor cycle road racing. Trials, scrambles, grass tracks and hill climbs all get theirshare but pride of place must go to theroad racing with the plum being the first, held on Good Friday at Brands Hatch. We were promised the first MV vs. Gileraclash since 1957 and this brought over60,000 spectators to the circuit to seeDerek Minter (Gilera) and Mike Hail-wood (MV) battle. But it was not to be.The first race of the day was for 350ccmachines and it produced a wonderfulscrap over ten laps between Phil Read(Norton), Mike Duff (AJS), Derek Min-ter (Norton) and Mike Hailwood (AJS).Then on the last lap Hailwood fell whenleading Minter only four hundred yardsfrom the finish. So close was Minter thathis fairing struck Hailwood and sentMinter onto the grass verge but hestayed aboard to win the race. WithHailwood lying motionless by the trackambulance men rushed to his aid and thespectators stood silent, fearing for thesafety of Mike and bemoaning the factthat the race they had come to sec wouldobviously not take place, for the crashhad occurred at something in the regionof one hundred miles an hour. Then amighty cheer from the crowd as Hailwoodstood up and was helped into the ambu-lance — he had a severe shaking and adamaged wrist, the full extent of whichwould not be known for a couple of weeks.Even without Hailwood the sparks flewin the big race of the day for Minterrecorded the first-ever over ninety milesan hour lap at Brands by_a motorcycle.Brands Hatch competitors had a day offto get to the International meeting atSnetterton on the Sunday. Strongest over-seas contingent came from Sweden and tothem went the honours for the day. Forthe first time ever a Swedish rider Was towin a road race in England. The manSven Olaf Gunnarsson and the race the500cc final — the big race of the day — forthe Molyslip Trophy. Twenty-eight-year-old Sven is a car salesman from Gothen-burg and he showed scintillating form inhis heat though beaten into third placeby Dave Degens and Mike Duff, bothMatchless mounted But by the time thefinal came it was raining cats and dogswith the track awash in places. Revellingin these difficult conditions Sven got abeautiful start on his Torsten Argaard-tuned five-speed Norton and was neverheaded during the race.Winner of both sidecar races was Flor-ian Camathias (BMW) who rides with hischair English-style on the left. He beatworld champion Max Deubel in the 500ccrace and just got the better of Bill Boddice(650cc Norton) in the 1200cc event heldin pouring rain. Canadian Mike Duff(AJS) won the 350cc race after a scrapwith Selwyn Griffiths, also Ajay-mounted.Griffiths had not done anything particu-larly outstanding before this race so itremains to be seen whether it was a soli-Easter inA new name from New Zealand, GingerMolloy wins 250cc race at Snettertonon his 196cc Bultaco.First Swedish rider to win a British roadrace, Sven-Olaf Gunnarsson (Norton).tary inspired performance by the Welsh-man. Smiles all around in the pits though, for during practice Duff’s sponsor. TomArter, had been helping Griffiths sort outa carburetion problem. Irishman TommyRobb on his works production Honda wonthe I25cc race as he had done at BrandsHatch whilst fourth and fifth places wentto Bultaco-mounted Swedish riders Carls-son and Hogberg. To complete a truly in-ternational event the 50cc race was wonby Englishman Dave Simmonds on hisTohatsu, whilst New Zealander “Ginger"Molloy had his first European victorywhen he won the 250 race on his 196ccBultaco. Molloy has been racing for tenyears in New Zealand and plans to do theContinental Circus this year with hisBultaco and a 7R AJS and G50 Matchless. He should do well.Easter Monday saw the Gileras outagain at Oulton Park in the second In-ternational meeting of the weekend. Min-ter and Hartle both broke the 500cc laprecord with Minter finally setting a newfigure at 91.86 mph. Tommy Robb gotthe better of Steve Murray in a 125ccproduction Honda battle that gave theIrishman three wins in three outings. Thenew five-speed Aermacchis arc remarkablyrapid for a pushrod motor and it was withone of these models that Brian Clark wonat Oulton and Brands and took secondspot at Snetterton - success richly de-served by a trier who has not had all theluck. But you just cannot keep the nameMinter out of things and he was leadingClark at Brands on the Cotton Telstarwhen it cooked a plug.To my mind the battle of the weekendwas the Oulton Park sidecar race whichEnglandBY B. Whilst Deubel was handi-capped to a certain extent by the con-tinental right-hand chair, Harris rode bril-liantly and showed that in the 500cc classhe has no British equal and will give thecontinentals something to think about in1963. Also run on Easter Monday was theCommonwealth Trophy meeting at Thrux-ton and here Mike Duff swept the board, winning the big race of the day.For scramblers the big meeting was theHants Grand National held on Friday andmade all the more important this year bythe first appearance of the ne\v BSAchallenger for the 500cc World MotoCross Championship. This is a unit con-struction machine of 420cc being muchlighter than the old 500cc Gold Star.Ridden by Jeff Smith it won the first raceand finished second in the next, therebygaining first place on final classification.Jeff was chased hard and. indeed, led inthe second race by Don Rickman (Match-less Metisse) so no doubt the search formore power will go on al BSA to producea world beater.Last but not least, the trials men hadtheir day of fun in the West Country con-testing the annual Beggars Roost trial. Itproduced two new winners for the eventwith Mick Dismore of the James teamgaining his first-ever national win. whilstin the sidecar class Alec Wright and JohnGazely continued on the winning roadwith their 246cc Greeves sidecar outfit, beating last year's winner Ken Kendall bytwo marks. The margin in the solo classeswas even narrower, with Dismore winningby one mark from last year's winnerMalcolm Davis (246 Greeves). •16875-AL-6307-08
