Man and Weather Satellites

There is a saying that "everybody talks about

the weather but nobody does anything about it."

We do not know whether Mark Twain was the first

to say this, as some suppose, but we do know that

scientists are doing things about the weather, espe-

cially to help predict it.

One important thing in this respect was done

on February 17, 1959, when, at 10:55 A.M., East-

ern Standard Time, a Vanguard rocket took off

from Cape Canaveral in Florida to place the first

weather satellite into an orbit around the earth.

The satellite, forerunner of larger and more

complicated devices to come, weighs 21% pounds

and is a sphere 20 inches in diameter. The orbit

which it assumed is large. The point of the orbit

closest to the ground, called the perigee, is 347

miles distant, the point farthest from the ground,

called the apogee, is 2,065 miles away.

The Vanguard weather satellite should stay in

this orbit for at least two centuries, if future space

ships do not remove it as a menace to space navi-

gation. The useful life of the Vanguard satellite

was only about one week. While its batteries were

still active, the satellite told scientists on the ground

whether the places it passed over had cloudy skies.
