BELGIAN GRAND PRIXJack Brett, Norton, Declared WinnerAfter Leader Liberati DisqualifiedHEAT was the order of the day at the Belgian GrandPrix, both on the thermometer (around the centurymark) and in hot and fast competition over the ultra-fast8l/2 mile course at Francorchamps, with speeds well overthe century mark.This Belgian circuit, near famed Spa, is undoubtedlyone of the most scenic courses anywhere. Located in theArdennes, the course is surrounded by green pine trees;the paddock and starting area has a new look with itssteel and glass control tower, and the adjoining riders”pits have gaily colored interiors, and they look goodenough to live in. Never have I seen such a display ofcolor. Even the grandstand chairs were of different colors,and the array of gas and oil trucks, the masse? of flagsagainst the dark green backdrop of tall pine trees wasall like something that only color film could capture anddo justice.Early hightlights of the 500cc race was Keith Campbell’srecord shattering lap at 118 mph on the Guzzi V-8. Surteeswas in hot pursuit on his MV-Augusta 4. Both riders soonretired with engine trouble, and Italian Ace Libero Lib-eral took command with his Gilera 4. He raced on to thecheckered flag, followed by Jack Brett on a Norton. Win-ner Liberati was disqualified for changing mounts justprior to the start of the race (as his own Gilera failed tostart). Therefore Brett was declared the victor.The Sidecar race was a 1-2-3 clean sweep for BMW ridersSchneider, Camathias and Hillebrand. A record averagespeed of almost 99 mph was turned in.Keith Campbell took top honors in the 350cc event withhis single cylinder Moto Guzzi. He heat Liberati, who wasriding a Gilera 4.Riding an MV-Augusta, John Hartle headed the 250ccrace. He was followed by Miller and Sandford, both Mon-dial-mounted. Hartle averaged 106 mph over the 78 miledistance.The 70 mile 125cc race was far from “slow,” with Italianrider Provini winning and averaging 102 mph on hisMondial.START of the 350cc race over the fast and scenic Belgian G.P. course. Keith Campbell leads back on his Moto Guzzi.AFTERNOON SHADOWS—John Clark, riding a streamlined Moto Guzzi, leads Australian KeithBryen, riding a Norton.NEW LOOK to race circuit is given by thismodem control tower. Riders’ pits are in openstalls along bottom right.ITALIAN FAVORITE Libero Liberati accelerates away from a hairpin bend on his four cylinder Gilera. He is in the running for the World Champion-ship title. He won this 500cc race, but was disqualified for changing machines just prior to race.
