Newcomer to the Norton range is this 600 cc ohv single. Known as the Model 19, it is primarilydesigned for side car work.THE introduction of a new 600 ccoverhead valve machine and thediscontinuation of four models are fea-tures of the manufacturing programfor 1955 announced by Norton Motors,Ltd., of Birmingham.The new motorcycle is in effect areintroduction in up-to-date guise ofthe Model 19, which has not been inthe Norton range since 1939. It isdesigned primarily for sidecar en-thusiasts.The four machines wihtdrawn arethe two side-valve models—the 500 cc16H and the 600 cc "Big 4”—the rigid-frame 500 cc o.h.v. Model 18 and the500T competition machine. The Model18 will continue in rear-sprung formas the Model ES2, and the new 596 ccsingle cylinder o.h.v. Model 19 will beavailable in both rear-sprung and rigid-frame versions.Star of the Norton range is theModel 88 Dominator de luxe, a high-performance 500 cc vertical twin. Thismachine, in common with the over-head-camshaft International models,employs the famous "Featherbed”frame as fitted to the factory racingmounts, and an improvement pioneeredthrough racing experience is that therear sub-frame is to be integral withand welded to the main frame, givinggreater rigidity to the rear of the ma-chine. Already renowned for beautyof line, the Model 88 is further en Ihanced in appearance by the employ-ment of the wide rear fender used iwith success on the standard Model 7 IDominator twin.Light alloy cylinder heads are stand-ardized throughout the range, and willbe featured on all single- and twin-cyl-inder engines, while other modifica-tions affecting all models include a re-shaped handlebar, giving a more com-fortable riding position, and boxed-inrear number plates of an easy-cleantype.The familiar black “Norton” tanktransfer, used without change for somefifty years, has now given place to amodern three-dimensional plastic med-allion in black and silver, giving aneat and pleasing effect.With the exception of the "Feather-bed”-framed machines, all models willnow be fitted with a redesigned dualseat affording greater comfort to therider and blending with the modernlines of the range, while new kneegrips improve the tank outlines.The latest type of Amal "Monobloc”carburetor, with integral float andmixing chambers, is fitted to allmodels, giving greatly improved com-pensation with better acceleration, atthe same time economizing in gasconsumption.
