THOSE ENTHUSIASTS that havebeen in the sport of motorcyclingsince the pre-war days, will recall thefamed German DKW Motorcycle. Thisfabulous two-stroke had many impres-sive victories and records to its creditin European racing circles. Since therebirth of the German motorcycle in-dustry in the postwar era, U. S. follow-ers of the German marques have oftenwondered when some progressive dis-tributor would import the DKW. Theirquestion has finally been answered, forthe DKW has now arrived on the WestCoast. Distributed by Marty’s ForeignMotors of Culver City, California, theDKW is currently available in twosizes: 200cc and 250cc.Cataloged as the RT200, the 200ccDKW was designed and developed aftertheir successful RT175 mode]. The newDKW (both RT200 and RT250) bristlewith quality workmanship, clean linesand sparkling finish. The RT200’s two-stroke engine develops 11 horsepowerat 5,000 rpm, giving the bike a topspeed of 65 mph, with fuel consump-tion (under normal riding conditions)being 95 miles per gallon. Offering amaximum speed of 71 mph, the RT250puts out 14.1 hp at 4,700 rpm, deliver-ing 88 miles per gallon. The RT200 hasa bore and stroke of 66 by 58mm, whilethe RT250 features a 70 by 64mm boreand stroke. Both models have a four-speed gearbox housed within thestreamlined engine cases.One feaure that adds a lot of eye ap-peal (to an already appealing machine)is the streamlined carburetor cover(see photo below). This cover can beremoved without tools. Fitted to thecarburetor is an air filter. The coveralso acts as an intake silencer.Both front and rear hubs on theDKW are of light alloy and are finned,for greater brake cooling. The toolboxis dust and waterproof and containsthe plastic case battery and the horn.A solo swing saddle comes as standard,altho a comfortable dualseat is op-tional.Distributor Pierre Marty is very en-thusiastic about these new DKWs, andafter examining and riding the motor-cycle. you’ll see where he has a justi-fiable pride in his product.
