IN EVERYONE’S mind there was no doubta thought, that the San Gabriel Hare andHound would surely go the same direction asthe Rams National two years ago. This iswhere a lot of the “hot shoes” flubbed theirdub. Bud Sage (H-D K) took things easy atthe start and when the rest of the “knowtheir way’s” found they were barking up thewrong trail, Bud and a few others were outin the breeze.This is not to say that Bud’s win was notdeserved, anyone will tell you that he tooledalong at a fair rapid pace to say the least.Coming in at the gas check an amateur wasin the lead, Jack Laprik (Matchless) by name,but soon had to give in to the determinationof Bud’s hard riding. Laprik was, however, thefirst amateur to finish.An old familiar face among sports riderswas long and gangly, “Feets” Minert. “Feets”,just back from a hitch in the service pulledup for a nice fourth place on his new BSAClubman.Finishing second was Jerry Platt (Match-less), Jerry sure has a rough time makingthat first place, sometimes “Oh so close”.Although you might say that some of theboys lost their way, I still maintain that ifsome simple directions were given at thestart, this situation would not have caused anytrouble. It seems hard to reailze why thedifferent clubs insist on making every starta big “hush hush” affair. When you considerthe time and energy involved (not to mentionthe expense) it’s hard to visualize how a clubcan keep from giving a few directions aimedat giving the riders time to get under way.Dust, other riders, yuka stumps, and so onare plenty enough grief in my estimation,“why make it a luck start?\"The run sponsored by the San Gabriel MCof San Gabriel, Calif, covered about 85 milesof rough sandy desert and by the looks of theboys when they came in, it was plenty longenough. Other class winners include JackLaprik (Matchless), first amateur; Wes Ander-son (H-D), first 74\"; Gerald Ralphe (Velo),first 21’; John Rich (DMW), first 200 cc.;Joe Koons (BSA), first 125 cc.It might be interesting to note that up untilshortly after the gas check there was a 200 cc.machine in 4th place, a DMW with DougSmith the jockey.—Don BrownWinner, Bud Sage immediately after the race.
