1952 democratic presidential candidate, Adlai Stevenson, appeared at a Flint, Michigan Labor Day event and was photographed sitting in a chair working on his speech having a hole in the sole of his shoe. If the internet had been around, that image would have gone viral.
The republicans pounced on the thing and made hay politically over it, implying that if the democrats got elected again, we\'d become so poor we\'d soon all have holes in our shoes, too, because we\'d have no money to buy new shoes. Democrats used it to sell metal lapel pins and tie tacks saying Stevenson was just one of us, trying to use it as a badge of honor.
But most everyone liked Ike that year, as this 3\" cello button promoting GOP candidate, Dwight D. Eisenhower attests, since he won that \"hole in shoe\" argument pretty significantly at the polls in November.
