Original, vintage magazine articlePage Size: Approx. 9\" x 12\" (23 cm x 30 cm)Condition: GoodBrian Stonebridge, winner, pleases the crowdwith a well controlled jump.British Team, Headed byBrian Stonebridge, Matchless,Takes Top Honors in theMoto-crossdes NationsE. J. Wiffen took 5th in the Senior InvitationRace.WHILE the lowest total time ofthe three fastest riders on a teamdetermined the winner of the spectacular6th annual Moto-cross des Nations—which this year went to the Britishteam—Brian Stonebridge was unques-tionably the star of the day. It was hiswinning time of 51 min. 50 sec. whichbrought his team’s time to 2 min. 5.8sec. lower than the Belgian team’s ag-gregate.Stonebridge’s closest competitor wasBelgium’s Auguste Mingels, who iscalled “manmountain” due to his giantsize, and his riding ability matched thatsize—terrific. But the Englishman hadthe edge and the urge, and it was hisday! Both men rode Matchless 498’s.The accompanying action shots takenby T. M. Badger at this event, indicatethe extreme punishment which both ma-chine and rider must take, and the skillnecessary to effect a place on the win-ning team. Britain’s G. H. Ward, A.J.S.,and P. A. Nex, B.S.A., took third andfourth to account for the balance ofGreat Britain’s team time.Mingels headed the Belgian team ofV. Leloup, who rode his F.N. to 5thplace, and A. van Heuverswijn, in 7thspot with a Sarolea. The Moto-cross des Nations was heldthis year on the new course at BrandsHatch, Kent, England. The Belgian teamhad taken two and Great Britain threeof these former Scrambles, and it wasan accepted fact that the fight would beJ. C. M. Avery loves the high jumps, and heredemonstrates why.G. H. Ward, 3rd place man in the Scrambles, and 2nd on the British team.between these two teams for this year’swin. It was a colorful, as well as spectacu-lar event. The teams from each country,Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Holland andGreat Britain, wore different colored jer-seys, and before the main event theriders marched before the grandstandto the accompanyment of their respec-tive National Anthems. The race got underway over the new1.75 mile circuit, and Stonebridge tookan early lead. It was not easy, how-ever, for Auguste Mingels was tailinghim very closely—only 3 seconds back,in fact. Fifteen laps full of steep climbs, abrupt down-hill grades, sharp turns andlong straights were a terrific challenge, and on the fourth of these Mingels hadcaught and was leading Stonebridge by13 seconds! Something had clearly hap-pened, for lap by lap Brian whittled thatlead down, and the crowd went wild asthey crossed the line side by side onthe eighth lap.Apparently Brian “rode Mingels offhis wheels” for he was leading by 22seconds when they came around on thenext lap, and Mingels did not challengethat lead again.Wonderful sportsmanship was dis-played between the teams, as the topman from each team was cheered, fol-lowing the trophy presentation cere-mony.Moto-cross des Nations1.
